Final preparations for this coming weekend for clu Final preparations for this coming weekend for club member Graham.

The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is the longest-running car event in the world. It celebrates the emancipation of road users, so is sometimes called The Emancipation Rally. Prior to 1904, all cars driven on the road had to be accompanied by a man walking in front, waving a red flag. The maximum speed limit was four (4!) mph. In 1904 the law was repealed, and this is celebrated every year on the first Sunday of November, in an event run by the Royal Automobile Club, where 400 cars will journey from Hyde Park to Madeira Drive in Brighton. If any of you have seen the classic Ealing comedy “Genevieve”, starring Kenneth Moore, Dinah Sheridan, Kay Kendall and John Gregson, you will recognise the event. The eponymous car in the film called Genevieve, a 1904 Darracq, will be taking part, as usual.

A very limited number of places (15) on the event are offered to bicycles, and these have to meet the same strict criteria as the participating cars: pre-1904, authentic, original and stringently scrutineered for compliance.

He is lucky enough to have secured a place, so will be lining up on the start line on Hyde Park’s South Carriage Drive at 0645 on Sunday and heading south to the coast.
